Kitchenaid Artisan

KitchenAid KSM150 Artisan Stand Mixer - Onyx Black (5KSM150PSAOB)

I have bought my first Kitchenaid mixer about 6 years ago and haven’t looked back. Infact only last year I bought another one as I use them for some commercial use as well. – Sammy

Specifications

  • Type of mixer: Planetary
  • Motor: 300W
  • Weight: 12 Kg
  • Bowl Capacity: 4.8L

The Kitchenaid Artisan mixer has been making life in the kitchen easier since it first came out in 1919. It has come quite a long way since then and now has features such as a tilt head function and 10 speed options. The bowl is quite large at 4.8L, is stainless steel, and designed to keep mixtures cool and allow optimum volume for mixes such as egg whites and meringues.

With an energy efficient 300W motor the Kitchenaid Artisan mixer has enough torque to mix even the thickest doughs. It comes with a flat beater, wire whisk, dough hook, and pouring shield. You also have the option to buy other attachments such as a sausage grinder, pasta maker, sifter and scale and heaps more. Kitchenaids have a reputation for being both durable and stylish (as my over 10 year old mixer proves having really been put to the test!) and are well worth the investment if it fits your budget.

What is a stand mixer?

A stand mixer is a mixer with a stand and a stationary bowl – they are also known as planetary mixers because (in most cases) the bowl stays still while the mixer rotates around inside it. Many models come with a range of mixing attachments such as a paddle, whisk, and dough hook.

They can save you a massive amount of time and energy in the kitchen and leave your hands completely free to do other things. Unlike food processors and blenders which are designed for chopping and pulverising, stand mixers are specifically for mixing and are especially perfect for bakers.

Kitchenaid has the reputation of being one of the most iconic and best stand mixer brands. To put that in perspective, my best Kitchenaid mixer is the one my mum passed down to me – it’s over 20 years old and still works great!

Features of the Best Kitchen Mixer

Here are some of the most important features to consider when trying to find the best kitchen mixers:

an image of the best stand mixer mixing a batter

Type of mixing

Planetary mixers have a stationary bowl and a mixer that rotates in one direction while the drive shaft rotates the opposite direction. The result is an evenly mixed batter (or whatever else you are mixing) with optimal consistency. The bowl is raised for the mixing position and then lowered when you are ready to remove it. They tend to be the best freestanding mixers and the most common due to their versatility.

If you’re all about that dough, spiral mixers have a reputation for being the best dough mixers because of the way the mixing action optimizes the structure of the gluten molecules. Unlike planetary mixers where the bowl is stationary, spiral mixers have one motor that rotates the bowl and the other that rotates the spiral arm. This mixing action also keeps the temperature of the dough lower which is better for yeast activation and fermentation control.

Motor and power

When looking for the best stand mixer Australia, you want it to have a well designed motor with optimum torque for those thicker doughs.

Keep in mind that higher watts does not necessarily mean more power – if the motor is not designed well and draws a lot of power with little torque, it may require more electricity to produce less power. Be sure to check previous reviews and you will probably find that weak motors have a lot of complaints of breakage.

Capacity

You want the bowl capacity to be able to handle your daily cooking and baking needs. If you only usually bake small batches, then you probably don’t need a large bowl capacity.

If you bake a lot,r regularly make large cakes or like to batch cook and fill the freezer, you might prefer a food mixer with a large bowl capacity (at least 4 L).

Controls

The controls of a stand mixer control the speed of the drive shaft. You need different mixing speeds so that you can mix up a variety of different ingredients. Some recipes, especially in baking, will need much slower speeds so that you’re not over mixing whereas other recipes like pizza dough will need fast settings to vigorously stretch the dough.

The most expensive models will usually have a wider variance of speed controls and therefore be more suited to different kinds of recipes.

Extras & attachments

Planetary mixers are more variable than spiral mixers because they come with more attachments such as a paddle, dough hook, and whip. The best baking mixer will usually come with at least a few attachments.

Some seriously high quality mixers come with some pretty impressive attachments. For example the iconic Kitchenaid mixer can even be fitted with a pasta maker, meat grinder and more.

FAQs

What is the best stand mixer to buy?

The best stand mixer to buy is one that fits your needs and budget. Do you bake at least once a week? Then you’ll want a durable mixer with a lot of torque and power. If you are only an occasional baker then durability is not as big as a factor.

Should I buy a planetary or spiral mixer?

A planetary mixer is the most versatile stand mixer, as it can process a variety of foods thanks to all the different attachments you can buy for it. We recommend a planetary mixer unless you own a bakery in which a spiral mixer would be a better fit.

Does higher wattage mean a more powerful motor?

Not necessarily. Wattage is just the amount of electricity a motor draws – a cheap motor could draw a lot of electricity but not have a lot of torque or mixing power.
