Types of Coffee Machines

Now, you’re ready to buy your first home espresso machine. Or, maybe you’re considering upgrading your machine and want to know what’s available. This guide will help you to decide if you want to consider looking at manual, semi automatic, fully automatic, or super automatic machines. Ultimately, I am here to help you find the best espresso machine in Australia for you.

This guide will help you review the best home espresso machines in Australia for different needs, budgets, and preferences. When looking through the reviews think about (1) how much time you want to spend brewing your espresso, (2) how much you know about brewing espresso, (3) how much you want to learn about brewing espresso, how much time you want to spend operating and cleaning your espresso machine, and (4) the amount of space you have in your kitchen for your new home espresso machine.

Manual Machines

The manual home espresso machines are the most traditional types of coffee machines. The quality of the coffee produced by them is entirely dependent on the operator’s skill. When used expertly, the best manual espresso machines produce the best tasting and most aromatic coffee. Even more attractive is the fact that the operator can customize each cup of coffee. Lastly, the operator is intimately involved in the brewing of each cup of coffee, becomes part of the coffee brewing tradition, and learns to truly respect the skill, time, and effort that goes into the production of a cup of coffee.

Pros, they don’t use any electricity or require any machine programming. Cons, the coffee can only be made with freshly ground coffee beans and the quality, flavor, and aroma of the coffee are totally dependent on the operator’s coffee brewing skills.

Semi Automatic Machines

Semi automatic espresso machines are widely considered to be the best espresso machine at home because they can be used by anyone, from beginners to pro-barista. They allow you to develop your espresso brewing skills and to brew flavorful, aromatic, perfectly balanced espresso each time. The coffee connoisseur can grind the coffee beans, tamp the ground coffee beans and extract the espresso. These machines let you customize your espresso,

There are a large variety of semi automatic machines available for purchase. The wide selection of styles, designs, functionalities, sizes, and other assorted options means you are likely to find a machine that appeals to you. Also, you can select a machine that is designed for someone at your level or for those who want to develop their pro-barista skills.

Fully Automatic Machines

Fully automatic machines use electric pumps that automate the how much water is used in the brew and the way the coffee is brewed. These machines are easier to use than manual machines. Unfortunately, they don’t allow you to brew your coffee to suit your particular tastes. So, if you buy one of these, make sure that you are happy with the flavor of the espresso it produces. The best automatic espresso machines may cost you as little as a few hundred dollars to more than a thousand dollars. Think long-term and by the machine that will make you the happiest over the years

Super Automatic Machines

Super automatic machines do everything for you. They grind the coffee beans, or use pre-ground beans loaded into the machine, tamp down the coffee grounds, automatically extract the espresso from the beans, and perform any other required functions necessary to create the perfect cup of coffee. Plus, the coffee beans or pre-ground coffee, used coffee grounds, milk, and other coffee additives are stored in the machine. Many machines are self cleaning too.

If you want the perfect cup of coffee with no mess, little to no effort, and very little clean up, the fully automatic machine is the best choice for you.

Stove Top Espresso Machines

The stove top espresso machines are also known as moka pots and stove top coffee pots. The best stovetop espresso maker can be used to make rich, strong, aromatic coffee, but not espresso. The stove top machine only applies 1-2 bars of pressure to tamped coffee beans whereas 9-12 bars of pressure must be applied to the tamped coffee beans to brew an espresso. Fans of the stove top machines say that they cannot taste the difference between their coffee and espresso. The fans may also be biased because stove top machines are cheaper than espresso machines, easier to operate, need less space in the kitchen, and much cheaper than espresso machines

Combination Machines

Do you want to spoil yourself and indulge your every espresso-based desire? If so, the combination machines are sure to be your first choice. The combination coffee maker and espresso machine is designed to brew cups of coffee, lattes, cappuccinos, mochas, and even iced coffee. It requires less skill to operate, and takes up less space in your kitchen. This kind of machine also allows you to make many different kinds of drinks – no pro-barista skills required.

Features of the Best Espresso Machine For Home

The best home espresso machine in Australia, for you, will vary based on your home and needs. If the best espresso maker for you is not within your budget, I’ve been there too, then buy the best budget espresso machine Australia for you and upgrade later. As you read the home espresso machine reviews consider the following:

Capacity

You should pick a home espresso machine that brews the number of cups of coffee that you normally need on a daily basis. If the tank is too small, you will spend copious amounts of time refilling the water tank. On the other hand, if the tank is too big, the standing water left in the tank will be like your own personal bacteria factory and may make you ill when you drink it. Super automatic machines don’t have this problem because they are connected to a water source and you will never have to fill their water tanks.

Milk Frother

The perfect espresso, as you know, has a bit of frothy milk on top of it. The frothy milk enhances the richness and sweetness of the espresso. So, if you like frothy milk with your espresso or to make drinks that require the use of frothy milk, then you should test the home espresso machine’s milk frother. Sample it to make sure that it delivers the quality of frothy milk that you require for your coffee. Also, if you will use frothy milk a lot, check if a steam wand comes with the machine.

Grinder

Be aware that some home espresso machines have integrated coffee bean grinders and others do not. An espresso machine with an inbuilt grinder makes it easier and less of a hassle to brew your delectable espresso. Also, if the grinder is part of the machine, you won’t have to buy a coffee bean grinder, saving you kitchen counter space and storage space. Plus, you will spend less time, energy, and effort when you brew your espresso.

Find the best grinder here.

Cleaning

When you buy your home espresso machine ask the sales rep how to clean the machine. If the cleaning of the machine is too complicated, it’s difficult to access the parts that must be cleaned, or it is time-consuming, strongly consider buying a different machine. Machine maintenance is critical to brewing a great espresso and keeping the machine functional. The best entry-level espresso machine is a super-automatic machine that cleans itself at the press of a button.

Other Features

As you shop for the best espresso coffee machine for home, consider other features that may add value to the machine and enhance your enjoyment of it. Some other machine features to consider are:

Size – People often like the bigger machines but a compact espresso machine may be a better choice. Make sure you buy a machine that is size appropriate for your counter space.

Design – Buy a machine that matches your kitchen decor. You want the machine to complement your kitchen decor not disrupt it or be an eyesore.

Brewing Speed – Select a machine that brews at a speed that suits you. If the brewing is too fast, the coffee may not taste very good. If it brews too slowly, it will be inconvenient and annoy you.

Cup Warmer – Keep your cup of joe warm, tasty, and inviting with a cup warmer. This means no reheating your coffee or brewing more coffee than necessary, because your coffee got cold.

Water Filter – Many places have hard water and you cannot prepare a good espresso using hard water. A water filter removes the contaminants in water, prevents your coffee from having a bad aftertaste, and helps you avoid spending money on buying bottled water.

Single or Double Boiler – The single boiler machine can only do one thing at a time, froth the milk or brew the coffee. A double or dual boiler can froth the milk and brew the coffee at the same time. The double boiler saves time when brewing your coffee.

Programmable Settings – The best entry level espresso machine has programmable settings. Programmable settings are the ultimate in convenience and ease for coffee connoisseurs. Depending on the machine, you may be able to program the time your coffee is brewed, the strength of your coffee, and other considerations. Also, some machines allow multiple users to program in preferred drinks and preparation times.

Pre-Infusion – Home espresso machines that have a pre-infusion function brew coffee that is more flavorful and aromatic. Pre-infusion soaks the coffee grounds in water so that the flavors and aromas can develop before the coffee is extracted during brewing.

Personalized/Saved Settings – Having an espresso machine that saves your customized coffee settings in a profile or under a specific name is a time saver and convenient. Make your favorite coffee, brewed to your personal specifications, by pressing a button.

Durability – Machines made of steel and with few electrical parts are likely to last longer and have fewer problems. If your machine is poorly built, don’t expect to celebrate a 10-year anniversary with it. Also, if you like the machines with the touch screen displays, lots of electrical parts, and complicated computer programming, expect that they are likely to need more repairs over time.
