Wait….What is an Air Fryer?!

So what is an air fryer, I hear you ask. Well, to be honest, it’s exactly what it sounds like. Rather than dipping your food in boiling hot oil, you just pop it in the air fryer and it does the same thing, only with much less oil.

Basically, air fryers use a fan to push really really really hot air around the food to cook it until it’s nice and crispy, but with none of the grease and fat of a deep fat fryer. It’s essentially a tiny oven, and you can cook anything in there that you’d normally put in the oven.

I know it sounds gimmicky, and like another appliance you can live without, but just wait until you’ve tried those first few air fried chips or that crispy chicken skin. I promise you, it’s worth it.

What are the Benefits of Air Frying?

There are a few benefits of air frying over deep fat frying, but the most obvious one is that it’s much healthier! Frying without oil means you’re eating food that has a much lower fat content and fewer calories.

A high intake of fat can lead to heart problems, as well as other physiological issues. Eating too many unhealthy foods comes with its own set of problems, including obesity which can lead to high cholesterol, diabetes and high blood pressure, among others.

An air fryer is not a quick fix for either of these problems, but it’s definitely a good change to make if you can’t get enough fried food.

Features of the Best Air Fryer in Australia

The best air fryer to buy will differ between homes and you need something that fits your needs. Be sure to keep all these features in mind before making a purchase.

Type

There are two types of air fryer, and before buying you should think about what you’ll be using it for, how many people you’ll be cooking for, as well as the size of your kitchen.

The best budget air fryer models are usually the rounded egg shaped ones, which look more like a regular fryer, with a basket you take in and out. These generally are just for frying, but you can also get a multifunction air fryer that allows you to grill, roast and bake too.

Multifunctional air fryers work more like a normal oven, with a rectangular shape and a front opening door. The best air fryer oven will have racks that can be moved about, so you can fit larger foods in, or cook multiple things at once. These models can cook pretty much anything that can be cooked in a regular oven.

Looking for the best multi cooker? Find our favourites here!

Capacity

Air fryer capacity is usually measured in litres, and most standard models are around 3.5L. These can hold nearly a whole bag of frozen chips, which is more than enough for two or three people. So if you’re looking for the best small air fryer, and don’t cook for a lot of people, a standard model should work for you.

If you have a larger family, I’d suggest going for one of the larger models. A 4L capacity fryer will just about hold enough for a family of four, but ideally, you should be looking at upwards of this.

Some models are measured in kg, and a capacity of 1.4kg should feed around four people.

Power

In our busy daily lives, quick and easy, but healthy, cooking is something we all strive for. Generally, air fryers have faster cooking times than an oven, but how do we know what to look for?

Well, we look at how powerful they are. The power of the fryer is measured in watts, the higher the wattage, the more powerful the machine. The more powerful the machine, the faster the cooking time. It’s that simple.

So, if you’re looking for the fastest cook time, look for the most powerful air fryer.

Controls & Presets

No matter how fast the cooking time, if the controls are complicated and hard to use, that air fryer won’t get used. Depending on your preference, there’s an air fryer to match. Some prefer digital controls, and some prefer knobs and buttons! They both have positives and negatives, but really, it’s a personal preference.

You may also want to consider buying a model that has preset functions for specific foods. This is especially helpful if you’re new to the world of frying. Simply pop your food in, press the preset button, and the machine will configure all the settings to ensure your food is perfectly cooked.

Additional Features

These are all important features to think about, but there are some additional points you may want to consider before purchasing.

  • Design – if you’re going to have this out on your countertop, think about whether it will look good there.
  • Display – in general, a digital display is easier to read.
  • Extras – does it come with any accessories that will make your life easier?
  • Ease of cleaning – for a busy household, this is especially important.
