Types of Coffee Machines

Choosing the best domestic coffee machine for your home is a long term investment so it’s essential to have some background knowledge of what is available out there in order for you to make an informed decision.

Ranging from manual to super automatic, the main difference between all these machines is how much you want to be physically involved in the coffee making process.

There is no single answer to which one is the best coffee machine in Australia but choosing the right machine for you will vary depending on the type of coffee you drink, the time you want to spend brewing and how much money you are willing to spend.

an image of the best home coffee machine

Manual Espresso Machines

Choosing the best Manual Coffee Machines can be quite a task! They’re classically designed and targeted for the coffee experts who love to experiment with coffee beans. A manual espresso machine has a motor driven pump that provides the exact amount of water you choose which is extracted through a lever or handle system so a lot more physical effort and strength is required for these machines.

The quality of the coffee may range from 0.5/10 to 10/10 all depending on the expertise and skill of the person making it. There are many detachable parts as well as steps to master to make the most of the experience. The machines do tend to be a little larger than the automatic so you will need a little more space.

It is not for everyone, but if you prefer to have full control over the coffee and want an authentic coffee making experience this type is worth considering. You’re not guaranteed consistent good quality coffee. Remember, practice makes perfect and this can quickly turn into a satisfying and rewarding experience once you figure out the method to use it correctly.

Semi Automatic Espresso Machines

The Semi Automatic Machine is a popular choice of brewing machine for those looking for a more “traditional” coffee making experience. When using this type of machine, the user needs to grind the coffee, extract the espresso and then froth the coffee with a separate milk frother.

The Semi Automatic Machine is for those who still want a high level of control in making their desired type of coffee. The key difference between the Fully Automatic and Semi Automatic function is that the latter allows you to control the pump (of the flow of water) depending on how strong you would like your coffee.

Choosing the best semi automatic coffee machine is important for those who want the perfect balance between. automatic and manual brewing techniques. Some experimentation and testing will be required to create the perfect cup of coffee but it will be worth it!

Fully Automatic Espresso Machines

In between the semi automatic and the super automatic lies something called the fully automatic espresso machine. If you’re looking to make a great cup of coffee with minimal  work involved and it comes down to a machine with the best efficiency, the fully automatic espresso machine is a great choice for you.

The way they work is that they’re equipped with a ‘flowmeter’. This is a device which controls how much water flows through, and also stops once enough water has been filtered to brew your coffee. So, you will still have to grind and tamp the coffee beans yourself but the machine will take care of pulling the shot.

Most machines have very simple designs which makes them both convenient and user friendly.

Super Automatic Espresso Machines

Similar to fully automatic, this machine takes it one step further with the grinding, tamping and brewing of coffee beans all done for you on the press of a button. For those who have limited time, patience and skill, this one is just right for you! Rather than using fresh coffee ground, fresh coffee beans are grinded and the milk is added within the machine.

These hassle-free machines are all inclusive. If you have the budget then the added ease and convenience may be worth it for the extra cost.

The higher end models even offer Bluetooth connection with your smartphone, creating different user profiles so you can store your coffee preference. De’Longhi and Saeco are two of the best automatic coffee machines brands worth taking a look at.

Capsule Coffee Machines

Capsule Coffee machines are a fairly new trend but popular in Australia because they’re so easy to use. You may be familiar with the “Nespresso” coffee machine marketed by George Clooney. This machine was originally developed by Nestle but now has been adapted by different companies.

The coffee for this machine is packaged and processed into a small capsule which is also known as a capsule or pod. Extremely easy to use, all you need to do is place the capsule into the machine and press the button. It is a mess free process and your coffee will be ready within seconds.

You can choose the type of coffee you like through the different pod flavours. The actual machine is very compact in size and easy to clean, perfect for those with smaller kitchens. The quality of the coffee will be consistent but an important factor to keep in mind is that buying the pods regularly may become quite expensive over time. Nespresso is definitely one of the best coffee machine brands to consider for convenience.

Take a look at our full article on the best coffee pod machine next!

Filter Coffee Machines

Filter Coffee machines are for the simple black coffee lovers. These machines are easy to use and don’t have too many advanced features. The major advantages of these machines are that they produce coffee in larger quantities and are quite affordable.

There are numerous variations available and they’re also known as ‘drip coffee machines’. The way it works is hot water is poured over ground coffee through a reusable or paper filter. It is brewed at lower temperatures and for a longer duration. The water then gradually absorbs the flavour and moves into the coffee pot. The pot remains on a heated pad in order for it to stay warm for a longer time.

Pour Over Coffee Machines

For the people who wish to reach precision and have some time on their hands, pour over coffee machines, assist in attaining high class results. This pour over coffee process is exactly what it sounds like and refers to pouring heated water on top of the coffee grounds with a cone like filter in the middle.

It is all about the tiny detail within the process which will help achieve a successful result.

The best part of this machine is you have complete control over the water distribution and how you would like your coffee so it’s easy to experiment with different elements to suit your taste buds.

There are also now completely automatic machines available which do the whole coffee making process for you with the pour over technique.

Features of the Best Home Coffee Machines

There are many other small features to consider when finding the best coffee makers Australia has to offer. The best value coffee machine might even have all these features in-built. These are the features to look out for:

Capacity

Generally, you will need to fill the coffee machine’s water tank yourself. Therefore, to carefully choose the Best at home coffee machine, you must consider how many people will be drinking coffee together.

If you’re alone, then a coffee machine with a small water tank would be sufficient but a large capacity coffee maker is handy if you find yourself often entertaining guests or living with other coffee enthusiasts.

Milk Frother

A Milk Frother is required if you love and look forward to the cafe style foamy froth on top of your coffee. Particularly, if you drink cappuccinos or lattes. There are typically 3 different types of frothers available to choose from. Some machines come with an automatic frothing function whilst for others, you may need to purchase an additional frothing accessory or steam wand.

The most critical factor to remember when picking a frother is to make sure it’s easy to remove and clean as bacteria may rapidly grow if not cleaned carefully after each use.

Grinder

For Coffee gurus, a machine with an integrated grinder can be a great investment. Grinders play a fundamental role in both automatic and manual coffee machines. The fresh ground flavour of coffee, as well as the aroma, is both a result of the grinder. Find the best grinder here.

Remember, the coarseness of a grind is directly correlated with the kind of espresso it produces so having an integrated grinder will make the whole process of grinding quick and simple.

Grinders are not too pricey to buy separately so if you find the perfect coffee machine without a grinder it shouldn’t be a deal breaker.

Cleaning

Some of the higher end super automatic models may come with auto rinse functions but ultimately, whichever coffee machine you choose for your home, it is recommended you clean after each cup of coffee. Descaling refers to removing the excess mineral build up inside your coffee machine.

Some machines have descaling functions whilst for budget machines, you will have to descale yourself manually.

Other Features

There are other small features available to make your coffee making experience smoother.  These are not a necessity but are great to consider finding the best coffee machine 2021. A few are listed below:

  • Preset – Some brands offer the option of programming and presetting your coffee requirements and what time you usually take it so it can be ready for you as soon as you wake up.
  • Display – Simpler machines won’t have them but the more higher range machines will come with a display. A digital display allows you to quickly navigate through exactly what you need when it comes to programming your coffee.
  • Cup Warmer – A great function which allows you to run errands in the but still enjoy a warm cup of coffee. This is the perfect feature for cold winter mornings.
  • Descale indicator – A descale indicator will expand the lifespan of your machine and is great to avoid maintenance problems later on.
